The position is a tenure-track nine-month academic year position with the possibility of summer teaching. The anticipated appointment date is Fall 2015.

Program: The Master of Rehabilitation Counseling program, which enrolled its first graduate students in August 2010, is the first such program in the El Paso region. Faculty members are expected to be proficient educators and dedicated researchers who are committed to serving the university and community. They are further encouraged to collaborate in both teaching and research with other university programs, clinical partners, and other regional universities.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include: (1) an earned doctorate from an accredited university in Rehabilitation Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Psychology, or a closely-related field; (2) eligibility for or current CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor) certification (CRC must be obtained within one year of hire); (3) a strong record of teaching excellence, including hybrid and on-line formats; (4) a minimum of two years’ experience in rehabilitation counseling practice; (5) a record of academic scholarship as demonstrated by research publications and the ability to secure extramural research funding consistent with appointment to assistant or associate professor (tenure-track or tenured); (6) a record of active participation or leadership roles in professional organizations; and (7) demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preferred qualifications include: (1) a strong foundation in quantitative research with a history of interdisciplinary collaboration; (2) a solid record of research in rehabilitation counseling; and (3) experience serving at-risk or underserved populations. Individuals with prior work experience in a multicultural setting and with a Hispanic and/or border health research focus are encouraged to apply. Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are also encouraged to apply.

The Department: The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences currently includes four academic units, all of which offer a graduate degree: Occupational Therapy (MOT), Physical Therapy (DPT), Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC), and Speech Language Pathology (MS in SLP). The MRC program is CORE accredited through 2022. A pre-professional undergraduate degree in Health and Rehabilitation is being planned. Departmental faculty members actively participate in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences PhD Program, which is jointly administered by the College of Health Sciences and School of Nursing. The department has approximately 228 graduate students and 19 full-time faculty members, who are widely recognized for their research and teaching in rehabilitation sciences in a Hispanic border context.

The College: The College of Health Sciences provides teaching, research, and service related to the applied health sciences (chs.utep.edu<http://ncre.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d5a2da3c1a53350f31f65bdb3&id=8969087b4e&e=e93a08a527>). It has five departments (Clinical Laboratory Science, Kinesiology, Public Health Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, and Social Work), a cooperative Pharmacy program with the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, and a collaborative relationship with the University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health-El Paso regional campus. Strong collaborative ties also exist with the UTEP School of Nursing, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. The College, which is staffed by over 60 full-time faculty members and serves over 2100 students, is nationally recognized for its innovative research in border health, and Hispanic health and health disparities. It has a record of success with NIH and external health research funding. The College was awarded $15.6 million in external funding during the past five years for its innovative health research projects. College faculty conduct research that spans basic and clinical science, from community to global health. The breadth of their research expertise includes health education and promotion, health literacy, chronic and communicable disease prevention and management, maternal-child health, nutrition, exercise science, disability and rehabilitation sciences, social stigma, and mental health. A cadre of graduate students assists faculty in conducting a variety of projects relevant to improving health outcomes in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The program is housed in the newly renovated Campbell Building, with dedicated clinical and rehabilitation sciences teaching laboratory space. In addition, our 138,000 sq. ft. building on the main campus houses state-of-the-art clinical and research laboratories, and innovative teaching and clinical simulation spaces.

The University: The University of Texas at El Paso is an emerging national research university at the heart of the U.S.-Mexico border region committed to the ideals of access and excellence. A leader among Hispanic-serving institutions, UTEP enrolls more than 23,000 students, about 80 percent of them Hispanic, and is the only doctoral research university in the nation with a student body that is a majority Mexican-American. UTEP is designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as “Community Engaged” and by the US Department of Education as “Hispanic-Serving.” UTEP faculty are nationally recognized for their commitment to student success, teaching, research, scholarship, and artistic expression.

UTEP comprises 8 colleges and offers 70 bachelor's, 76 master's, and 20 doctoral degrees - with more in development. UTEP's over $83 million in research spending a year ranks the University among the top 200 universities in the nation; and its more than $40 million in federal research spending ranks fourth among all Texas public universities. UTEP is currently undergoing a transformation, which will benefit from over $300 million in recent building expansions, renovations, and infrastructure improvements.

The center for intellectual capital in the region, UTEP has awarded more than 110,000 degrees since its founding in 1914. UTEP is one of the major economic engines in the Paso del Norte region, generating $369 million in local business volume and 7,050 jobs, and contributing $452 million in household income. UTEP offers exciting programs that are open to the public, including Division I athletics; award-winning theater, dance, and music; the internationally acclaimed Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts; the Centennial Museum and Desert Gardens; and continuing and lifelong education opportunities.

In its 2014 national university rankings, Washington Monthly again ranked UTEP in the top 10. In addition, UTEP maintained its #1 ranking as the nation’s leading university in fostering student social mobility. Our success in achieving both affordability and high quality in the low-resourced US-Mexico border setting requires a deep commitment by all UTEP faculty and staff, and our many friends and supporters.
