Post-Doctoral Advanced Training on Outcomes in Rehabilitation Research (UW-ATORR)

Two post-doctoral training fellowships funded by the National Institute on Rehabilitation Research and Disability (NIDRR) are available to applicants interested in applications of modern psychometric science in Rehabilitation Medicine. University of Washington is located in Seattle, Washington. The fellowships are for two years. Who should apply: Candidates from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation science, neuropsychology, rehabilitation counseling, speech pathology, rehabilitation medicine, bioengineering, neurophysiology, quantitative psychology, psychometrics and statistics, clinical or health psychology, psychometrics, educational assessment, health economics and policy. Typically we see two kinds of applicants: (1) candidates with a background in statistics and/or measurement interested in learning more about research with rehabilitation populations; or (2) candidates with training in rehabilitation disciplines interested in learning about applications of modern psychometric theory (e.g. Item Response Theory and related methodologies (factor analyses, Item Response Theory, Differential Item Function).

The Program: The fellowship provides an opportunity to work with a number of mentors at UW both in Rehabilitation Medicine and/or in related fields (e.g., radiology, health services, nursing). Trainees can develop, validate, evaluate or modify patient reported or performance-based instruments (including iPhone apps or interview protocols), and/or to receive additional training/mentoring in psychometrics or qualitative research methods. Post-doctoral fellows may work with their own data, collect original data during the fellowship, or use data from multiple large datasets associated with various projects conducted by mentors. The program is funded by the Dept. of Education NIDRR grant # H133P120002 (10/01/2012 – 09/30/2017).

Required Qualifications: (1) a doctorate in rehabilitation psychology, speech language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, rehabilitation counselor education, kinesiology, laboratory sciences or related area, (2) interest in health outcome science in rehabilitation medicine. Limited options for telecommuting may be available. Candidates with disabilities are encourages to apply. Applicants must have earned doctorates by Oct 1, 2014.
