THE UNIVERSITY

Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 9,000 students. As of spring 2013, the University had 497 faculty with 47% tenure track. The University is comprised of six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended and International Education, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. Degrees are offered in 45 majors at the bachelor's level and 16 at the master's level. Sonoma State University occupies 274 acres in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County, in Northern California. Located at the foot of the Sonoma hills, the campus is just an hour’s drive north of San Francisco and 40 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean.



THE DEPARTMENT

The Department is CACREP-accredited in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, and is further approved by the Board of Behavioral Science for graduate training leading to both the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) and the LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor) licensures in California, and is approved by NCATE and the California Teacher Commission for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential. DUTIES OF THE POSITION

Master’s level graduate courses to be taught will require a breadth of counseling/clinical knowledge, including lifespan development, counseling interventions for diverse populations, theoretical bases of counseling approaches, and clinical supervision skills. In addition to teaching, advising, scholarship, and service, all faculty are expected to assist with program assessment and administrative tasks.



PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking applicants who will have primary identification in our Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program. We are particularly interested in applicants with a focus in children and families and who have experience doing child therapy. Applicants should demonstrate multicultural competence in working with diverse clients, supervisees and students.



Candidates must have an earned doctorate either in Counselor Education or Counseling Psychology (the latter must have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a Counselor Education program for a minimum of one academic year). Ph.D. must be completed by the start of the Fall, 2014 semester. Candidates should have strong teaching and supervision skills as well as significant counseling experience; eligibility for California licensure is preferred.To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.



RANK AND SALARY

The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level. Salary starts at $63K and is dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
