March 28th
Speaker: Eric M. Burke
Topic: Modern Warfare, Returning Home, Post Traumatic Stress and Its Treatment
 [cid:image001.jpg at 01CE23C1.13F6E150]
An OU undergraduate in history, Eric Burke served in his teens and early twenties for a total of 30 months as a combat infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan. Until recently, he was one of an estimated 270,000 PTSD-wounded Post 911 War veterans who - because of stigma-enforced silence and bureaucratic roadblocks - had not received adequate treatment. However, beginning in 2012, not only did he seek and begin treatment, but he also helped to combat the stigma surrounding PTSD with a Soul Of Athens video titled The War Within<http://vimeo.com/42568072> and by speaking at the Athens area's annual Crisis Intervention Training for police.

(1.5 CEUs will be available.)

April 25th
Speaker: Bridget Bailey
Topic: Bipolar Disorder: Lived Experience and Research Topic

[cid:image002.jpg at 01CE23C1.13F6E150]Bridget Bailey, MSW, is a doctoral student at the College of Social Work at Ohio State University. She was diagnosed as an adolescent with bipolar disorder when that disorder in children and adolescents was not widely recognized. Her experiences and those of other friends and family with serious mental illness inspired her to specialize in research concerning childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder. Her research focuses on evidence based treatments for that segment of the population and how to implement them in community mental health centers. She has worked at OSU Harding Hospital in the Childhood Mood Disorders Lab for two years on several studies advancing the current knowledge base regarding that phenomenon.

August 29th
Speaker: Karen Curlis
Topic: Surviving Schizoaffective Disorder and Working in Behalf of My Peers
 [cid:image003.jpg at 01CE23C1.13F6E150]
In sound recovery from schizoaffective disorder, Karen Curlis devotes her considerable energies to helping her peers. She has served on Supreme Court, Attorney General, and regional task forces concerned with the interface between consumers and the criminal justice system. Former president of the Ohio Center for Advocacy, Training, and Support, she also does peer advocacy and support through recovery tools such as PAD, WRAP, Peer-to-Peer and In Our Own Voice. In 2012, she was one of only eight persons nationwide to win a Voice Fellowship Award from the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration.

September 26th
Speakers: Darcy and Paul Granello
Topic: Because Every Life is Worth Saving: Suicide and Suicide Prevention in Young People

[cid:image004.jpg at 01CE23C1.13F6E150]Each year in Ohio, we lose about 1400 lives to suicide, and more than 30,000 Ohioans have a suicide attempt. In 2010, we lost 196 Ohio youths (15-24), and more than 500 middle age adults. This workshop will use both the current state of the research and practice experience to teach the basics of suicide prevention and intervention. The Granellos are professors at Ohio State University and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors. Particularly concerned with the phenomenon of suicide in teens and college-aged youth, the Granellos have written three books on suicide and presented more than 200 times to mental health professionals in the state, nationally, and internationally.

October 24th
Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Cheavens
Topic: Borderline Personality: Now a Very Treatable Disorder

[cid:image005.jpg at 01CE23C1.13F6E150]Until recently, borderline personality disorder was seen as very hard, if not impossible, to treat. However, recent work with dialectical behavior therapy at Harvard, Duke, and the University of Washington (among other places) has turned that assumption on its head. Trained at Duke, Dr. Cheavens served there for three years as Associate Director of the Cognitive Behavior Research and Treatment Program before becoming an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Ohio State University and Director of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Clinic in the OSU Psychological Services Center.
