Domestic assaults constitute a significant proportion of juvenile offending and victimization in the United States. In one of every four assaults that youth commit, the victims are persons with whom the offender has a domestic relationship, i.e., family ties or intimate partnerships. Half of juvenile offenders victimized a parent and one quarter victimized a sibling. Surprisingly, one-third of these offenders are female.

Families dealing with domestic violence often see no way out of the ongoing conflicts that plague the home. Family members are likely to feel shame, guilt, insecurity, and a lack of trust towards each other. In many instances, only a capable professional can help a family embark upon the path to trust, security, and mutual respect.

This workshop is meant to challenge your understanding of youth domestic violence and arouse your thinking, sensitivity and decision making when working with families involved with domestic assaults by youth offenders.

Mr. Stanforth will help participants view adolescent domestic violence from a variety of lenses and will consider perspectives of the court and the clinician. He will educate participants on several assessment tools and a number of possible family interventions to assist the clinician as they engage the adolescent and their family.



The Presenter:

Gary D. Stanforth, LISW-S, LICDC has over 25 years experience working with adolescents. He currently is working on a Forensic unit at Summit Behavioral Healthcare, the largest regional Psychiatric Hospital in Ohio. Gary manages his own mental health/substance abuse office where he specializes in adolescent treatment. His past includes Chief Probation Officer at Warren County and Brown County Juvenile Courts. Gary designed and implemented an intensive drug and alcohol intervention program for the Court as well as being a facilitator for the sex-offender specific program. Gary and his wife were foster parents for Clermont County Juvenile Court for several years after he worked in their Adolescent Runaway Shelter. He assisted Mt. Orab Junior High school by creating an at-risk school program.
