Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program
In an effort to provide extended services to students in the MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, we instituted a “Professor of Practice” (POP) model. This model provides opportunities for students to develop deeper professional relationships with faculty members, as well as allowing for more consistent faculty commitment.
Specific requirements for this position include:
• A deep commitment to training professional counselors.
• Meeting site supervisors “in the field” for internship and supervising/monitoring students in Internship/Fieldwork courses.
• Coordination of student placement at internship/fieldwork sites.
• Organization of internship materials; staying updated with national standards/requirements
• Providing weekly individual and group supervision to students in Internship/Fieldwork.
• A willingness to join and affiliate with the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), Florida Counseling Association (FCA), and/or other counseling-related professional organizations.
• Attendance at weekly faculty/staff meeting. Each POP member will be an active member of any Professional Counseling department committee as needed (i.e., admissions, student evaluation, and curriculum).
• Each POP must be available to teach in various program formats (evening, weekend, online
• Each POP is assigned 1-2 particular courses to review for consistency and will assist other adjuncts who are preparing to teach these courses.
• POPs rotate attendance at New Student Orientations with core faculty.
• Each POP will be assigned individual student advisees as needed to meet with about career planning and post-masters questions.
• POPs will participate in at least one other campus wide faculty committee, as assigned, and support other campus activities.
Teaching:
• POPs will be allowed to select courses for the entire academic year
prior to adjunct faculty.
• POPs will teach a minimum of 4 courses per year.
Time Commitment:
In addition to attendance at the monthly Department Meeting, each POP
will commit a minimum 32 hours per month, including office hours, to the
Clinical Mental Health Counseling program participating in the
activities listed above. Each POP will maintain a record of time spent
in program-related activities and submit this record each month to the
Program Chair. If the time commitment is not fulfilled in any month,
these hours will be made up in the following month.
Job Requirements
Knowledge:
• Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision, preferably from a
CACREP accredited program or Doctorate in Counseling Psychology
preferred
• Licensed or licensed eligible as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor
in the State of Florida.
• Commitment to the field of counselor education as evidenced by
educational background, publications in peer-reviewed journals,
community service, experience and professional affiliation; conference
attendance.
• Must demonstrate evidence of successful teaching experience.
• Preferred teaching experience in a blended environment.
• Knowledge of the Multicultural Competencies for Counselors
(MCC’s) per ACA.
Skills:
• Experience with face to face and online teaching platforms and/or
online teaching experience preferred
• Knowledge of and comfort with online platforms, electronic files,
i.e. Blackboard, Web CT, ImageNow as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the
ability to build successful relationships with student populations.
• Outstanding conflict resolution skills; demonstrated cultural
competency skills.
• Demonstrated time management and detail-oriented skills
• Computer based skills (i.e., software, analytical, and report
writing skills)
Abilities:
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet frequently
occurring deadlines.
• Ability to develop a professional rapport with diverse
school/campus constituents.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse student population and
non-traditional students.
• Ability to develop and complete projects without continued direct
supervision
• Ability to learn from students' participation, demonstrates fair
and consistent behavior.
