> HB 555 is on a fast tract. The Administration wants to use the “new” report card , it's politically generated standards, and there poorly conceived and correlated measures to make schools look unsuccessful. We know the challenges we are facing in higher education as deans. The schools are asking for our support. I am certain we will want them to be there for us as well.

> These efforts are consistent with the privatization agenda against public education. Below is a document from OSBA that has a link to a number of legitimate concerns that need addressed in the current Bill. Please access the link, and forward them to others who you deem appropriate. Ask and encourage them to call their respective legislators and share these legitimate concerns, OR BE prepare to live with the results.

> House Bill 555
>
> The House Education Committee kicked off the lame-duck session last week by accepting a substitute version of House Bill (HB) 555, legislation that will make changes to Ohio’s academic accountability system. HB 555 is on the fast track and considered a priority for the legislature before it adjourns next month. The bill could be voted out of committee on Nov. 28, with a full House floor vote on Nov. 29.
>
> There are some positive changes to Ohio’s report card system contained in the bill. However, there are several provisions in HB 555 that are troublesome and we need your help in making sure legislators are aware of the negative effects these will have on school districts.

> Senate Education Committee
>
> The Senate Education Committee took up HB 543, legislation to incorporate youth suicide awareness and prevention training into school district in-service training requirements. The training will be required for individuals employed by school districts, such as nurses, teachers, counselors, school psychologists, administrators and any other personnel that the board of education determines appropriate. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills), does not expand the number of current in-service training hours, and materials are being provided to school districts free of charge through The Jason Foundation Inc. and other behavior health providers.

>
> The legislation was passed unanimously in the House and is expected to pass through the Senate once the legislature returns from the Thanksgiving holiday.

> HB 143 — Youth sports injuries
>
> The Senate Health, Human Services and Aging Committee accepted a substitute version of HB 143, legislation that requires training for coaches and referees, as well as procedures to follow with youth showing signs of brain injury. The provisions outlined in the legislation do not require any additional procedures than those the Ohio High School Athletic Association already has in place. The committee is expected to pass this legislation next week.
