Please mark your calendars for the winter installment of the Violet L. Patton Lecture Series, which will feature Lesotho Ambassador Sebatane.  The ambassador's topic will be, "International Comparitive: The Intersection of Commerce and Education." The event will take place on Thursday, January 31, in McCracken 241 A/B.  Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m., and he will speak from 12:15-12:45, with a Question/Answer session to follow from 12:45-1:00.  Please invite/bring your students to this important event. In January 2012 His Excellency Professor Eliachim Molapi Sebatane presented his credentials to President Barack Obama and became the 16th Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United States of America.  Ambassador Sebatane brings to the post over 35 years work experience in higher education both as an academic and administrator.

Prior to his assignment in Washington, Ambassador Sebatane served as Professor of Education, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor of the National University of Lesotho.  He holds a PhD degree from the University of Pittsburgh, has undertaken over 50 research studies, has produced several reports, and has close to 30 publications (journal articles, books, chapters in books, book reviews, and monographs) to his name.  He has been involved in several policy-related activities, including membership in the Business Council of Lesotho, Lesotho National Planning Board, Governing Council of the National University of Lesotho, Governing Council of Lesotho College of Education, Lesotho Technical Committee for the implementation of the SADC Protocol on Education and Training, and Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO. He has been a member of a number of Task Forces, for many of which he served as Chairman. These include the Multi-sectoral Task Force for the Development of the Qualifications Framework for Lesotho and the Task Force for the Formulation of the National Policy on Teacher Education and Training.  He has provided numerous professional services to national, regional and international organizations.  Ambassador Sebatane has also been a member of several national, regional and international professional societies and associations, some of which he co-founded and/or served as an officer. For example, he is a founding Chairman of the Lesotho Educational Research Association (LERA); a founding member of the Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland Educational Research Association (BOLESWA); a founding member of the Educational Research Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (ERNESA); a former  President of the International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA); a former Vice President of the Southern African Comparative and History of Education Society (SACHES);  a former member of the Board of Directors for the International Council on Education and Teaching (ICET); and former member of the Governing Council of the African Network for the Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN).  He is a former recipient of both the American Studies Research Fellowship and USAID sponsorship for graduate studies.
His priorities in Washington include promoting trade between the two countries through the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and other channels, facilitating implementation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, promoting Lesotho as a tourist destination of choice, promoting cooperation in enhancing health services for Lesotho, and creating opportunities for Lesotho to develop its human capital through training and education.
Ambassador Sebatane is also Lesotho's chief representative to several South American countries including Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. He is married with four grown up children and three grandchildren.
