Healthy Child Manitoba: Implementing Universal Prevention Programs for Children and Youth

Thursday, May 31st, 2012 from 2:00 - 3:30 PM Eastern

Manitoba, Canada has implemented a widespread prevention program in the province's schools with the goal of helping all children develop into healthy adults. The initiative is utilizing the PAX Good Behavior Game to improve the well-being of Manitoba at the population level. "PAX", as the students and teachers call it, is one the few strategies scientifically proven to prevent or avert multiple lifetime mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. "PAX" also has immediate benefits for teaching and learning.

Join us for a webinar during SAMHSA's first annual Prevention Week to learn about the interventions being utilized and the process of implementation of this exciting initiative. SAMSHA is funding 19 sites nationally to implement PAX Good Behavior Game-as a result of the 2009 Institute of Medicine Report on the Prevention of Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Disorders in Young People.

The webinar will provide info on how both PAX and something like Healthy Child Manitoba might be implemented in your community.

Presenters

Dennis Embry, PhD, President/Senior Scientist, PAXIS Institute

Leanne Boyd, MSW, RSW, Director - Policy Development, Research and Evaluation, Healthy Child Manitoba Office

Rob Santos, PhD, Associate Secretary to Healthy Child Committee of Cabinet, and Executive Director, Science and Policy, Healthy Child Manitoba Office

Further Details:
PAX is not a curriculum. Rather, PAX is a "classroom environmental" strategy that teaches children voluntary control over attention and self-regulation. Both teachers and students work together on a vision of creating a "wonderful school" through easily implemented strategies that have both rigorous scientific proof and links to cultural wisdom.

Healthy Child Manitoba (HCMO) is an office of Cabinet, established by the Healthy Child Manitoba Act. Responding to research indicating the first five years of life are critical to a child's future development, in 2000, the provincial government implemented the Healthy Child Manitoba (HCM) Strategy - a network of programs and supports for children, youth and families. This nationally recognized strategy was set in legislation under The Healthy Child Manitoba Act in 2007.

Led by the Healthy Child Committee of Cabinet, Healthy Child Manitoba bridges departments and governments and, together with the community, works to improve the well-being of Manitoba's children and youth. HCM focuses on child-centered public policy through the integration of financial and community-based family supports.

The Healthy Child Act is a model for other jurisdictions to adopt.
