Spring is here and for many many, this is a time of renewal as we get back into the fresh air and sunshine. OCA continues to go through it own renewal, as the association continues its work to support the counseling profession. Much work has been done to advocate for counselors legislatively, establish a strengthened professional identity and devote greater energy to providing our members with meaningful resources. Senate Bill 205 and Licensure of Art Therapists: Senate Bill 205 establishes procedures and requirements for the licensure of art therapists and would add art therapists under the umbrella of the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. OCA has taken a position of opposition against this bill.

Senate Bill 287 Chemical Dependency/Alcohol Prevention: Senate Bill 287 will increase access and provide a more reasonable pathway and incentive for new and existing professionals to advance in the addictions treatment and prevention fields while strengthening the foundational knowledge  of its entry level workforce.

CSWMFT Board Bill: The CSWMFT Board is continuing its work on introducing legislation that will make numerous changes to the laws affecting counselor, social worker and marriage and family therapists. OCA Public Service Announcement Available on the Web

OCA, with the support of the ACA Midwest Region Office, has gained access to a public service announcement highlighting the value of counseling services and counselors. This page is designed for those seeking counseling services or more information about counseling. Legislative Advocacy Day Date Change and Registration
The date for the Legislative Advocacy Day has been changed to Monday, May 14, 2012. The event runs from 9:30am-1:30pm and takes place in the Atrium of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. Legislative Advocacy Day provides counselors with the opportunity to receive advocacy training, receive legislative updates, listen to state officials speak on matters of importance to counselors and have the opportunity to meet with your elected officials to share your concerns and needs as a professional counselor. The cost of the event is $50 and several groups are making available scholarships for graduate students to attend. The AOCC is seeking proposals for sessions with engaging practices that can be easily implemented into one's professional practice. Proposals focused on both the beginner and advanced levels are welcome. Lead presenters must be a member of OCA and/or OSCA to present at the AOCC. If you are submitting a proposal that you consider to be eligible for Counselor Board CEUs, you must submit a maximum two page CV/resume to ocaohio at yahoo.com<mailto:ocaohio at yahoo.com> along with your proposal.

If you are selected to be a presenter, you will be required to submit your handouts in PDF Format by October, 17, 2012. All presentation handouts will be loaded to the AOCC website prior to the conference for participants to download and print prior to and after the conference. Presenters may still provide handouts if desired.
