A high school in Shenzhen, China has asked me to help them identify candidates for a school counselor position they have opening up in the fall, and I was wondering if you might be able to share this opportunity with soon-to-graduate students in the Counselor Education program. Guidance Counselor Job Description:



Distinguishing Features of Work: Provides support services to students, staff, and parents. Support services include referrals, counseling, assessment, diagnostics, and report writing. This work takes place at the school site, in other public buildings, and in private residences. Additional responsibilities include student rostering/scheduling, maintaining individual student Education Plans, etc. This is a twelve (12) month position. Delivery of direct services in the application and/or admissions process for study abroad include:

§  Provides direct support service to individual students, small groups, and classrooms.

§  Completes assessments, referrals, and counseling with students and families.

§  Help students develop self-advocacy and decision and learn to become good problem-solvers and decision-makers on their own.

§  Student Appraisal - help students, parents, and teachers by collecting information about student abilities, behaviors, and achievement so decisions can be made about educational placement and instructions.

§  Preparation for the college application process or  summer study programs or other extra-curricular activities that require application or the filing of official forms or documents.

§  Facilitation of the application process for study abroad (college or Summer programs).

§  Writing an official college counselor letter of recommendation for all students.  This duty may include gathering information from students, parents, teachers and school records as needed.

§  Filing of proper forms or support material in a correct and timely manner.

§  Advising students and parents in small or large groups as needed – this includes educating students and parents about colleges, the admissions process and college choices especially in those aspects that are unique to International students.

§  Dissemination of information re. the college application and/or admissions process through appropriate media.

§  Individual student assessment and planning.



Indirect delivery or system support services such as:

§  Compiling the annual profile of the school.

§  Completing all school report forms required by colleges including the mid-year report and student evaluations.

§  Meeting with college/university admissions representatives that visit the campus and facilitating meetings between college representatives and students.

§  Keeping students and parents informed about the college admissions process and approaching dates of interest, e.g., standardized test dates, through timely communication.

§  Keeping track of admissions decisions and statistics and compiling final reports after all decision periods have ended.

§  Compiling and disseminating other reports as requested.

Qualifications:
Necessary skills include excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.  Experience in college admissions or high school college counseling, teaching experience, and computer skills are plusses.

The ideal candidate will have experience in college admissions or high school college counseling, teaching experience, and above average computer skills.  In addition, s/he will have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of an independent college preparatory school; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population; knowledge of colleges with regard to the Common Application and non-Common Application schools, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures.

 The counselor’s attitudes and skills are very important to the quality of the counseling relationship.  The ideal candidate’s qualities and behaviors are as follows:

·         Intellectual Competence- counseling requires a person to have adequate knowledge of many different areas.  This involves searching for data to make informed decisions about choice of plan and progress of student.

·         Energy- Counseling is emotionally demanding.  When dealing with problems counselors are likely to feel emotionally drained and physically fatigued.  Being dynamic produces student confidence and a willingness to work.

·         Flexibility- Effective counselors are not tied to a single method of work.  The question they ask is “Which technique will work best for this particular student?”

·         Support- Our goal is for the student to experience genuine concern for who they are as a person and be able to appreciate the concept of mutual respect in the symbiotic student-counselor relationship.

·         Good Will- The counselor’s motives and intentions are positive and constructive rather than negative and destructive.

·         Cultural awareness and sensitivity – Although the counselor is to operate within the context of an international curriculum that is by essence western, the larger cultural context requires him/her to exhibit an elevated cultural awareness with respect to Chinese culture and its approach to education.

·         Self-awareness- All our feelings and thoughts influence the way we handle certain things in the counseling relationship.
