Two Positions in Counselor Education

Background: Portland State University, with an enrollment of approximately 30,000 students, serves the Portland metropolitan area, which is a vibrant and growing community with a culturally diverse population of 1.5 million people. Portland State University’s motto “Let knowledge serve the city,” highlights the campus as a national leader in university–community partnerships. PSU’s Graduate School of Education prepares teachers, administrators, and counselors for urban, diverse, and other communities. The Counselor Education Department at PSU provides Master’s level preparation in the areas of (a) clinical mental health counseling, (b) marital, couple, and family counseling, (c) rehabilitation counseling, and (d) school counseling. The school, clinical mental health, and marital, couple and family programs are CACREP accredited while the Rehabilitation program is CORE accredited. Strengths of the department include collegial faculty, excellence in teaching, and a model, on-campus Practicum Clinic.

The Counselor Education department is seeking to hire two tenure-track faculty members with background and experience in a CACREP or CORE accredited program who can teach CACREP core as well as program-specific courses. One position is for a faculty member who can provide leadership and teach courses in the school counseling program. The other position is for a faculty member with a mental health counseling focus who can teach courses such as Developmental Foundations in Counseling, Foundations of Mental Health Services, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Counseling Practicum, and Multicultural Counseling as well as courses specific to specialization. Applicants should have a record that shows promise of success in teaching, supervision, and research.

Required Qualifications for both Positions:

 *   Earned doctorate in Counselor Education
 *   Experience/interest in teaching CACREP/CORE core courses
 *   Experience providing counseling supervision
 *   Experience in multicultural and diverse settings
 *   Potential for developing a robust scholarly agenda
 *   Successful completion of a criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications for School Counseling Position:

 *   Earned doctorate from a CACREP accredited program
 *   Evidence of capacity to coordinate a CACREP school counseling program
 *   Evidence of capacity to advise diverse students in successfully completing requirements in a multifaceted school counseling program
 *   Ability to teach school counseling courses, including action research, and to assess school counseling portfolio requirements
 *   Experience designing programs in alignment with state licensing requirements
 *   Experience supervising Practicum at an on-campus counseling clinic, or equivalent
 *   Experience as a school counselor
 *   Clinical practice experience
 *   Supervisory experience with off-campus internship sites, or equivalent
 *   Awareness of national and state issues affecting counselors’ ability to practice

Preferred Qualifications for Mental Health Counseling Position:

 *   Earned doctorate from a CACREP or CORE accredited program
 *   Identification with and preparation in clinical mental health counseling or rehabilitation counseling (with mental health focus)
 *   Evidence to provide leadership in the clinical mental health counseling program and to teach courses such as diagnosis and treatment planning, foundations of mental health services, multicultural counseling, research methodology, and psychopharmacology
 *   Evidence of capacity to advise diverse students
 *   Experience supervising Practicum at an on-campus counseling clinic, or equivalent
 *   Clinical practice experience
 *   Supervisory experience with off-campus internship sites, or equivalent
 *   Awareness of national and state issues affecting counselors’ ability to practice

Responsibilities for both Positions:

 *   Teach courses in the department’s CACREP/CORE curriculum as well as program-specific courses
 *   Advance a scholarly agenda related to counselor education and supervision
 *   Supervise students in practicum and internship field placements
 *   Participate in seeking grants and other sources of external funding to support scholarly agenda
 *   Serve as an academic advisor to students in the Counselor Education department
 *   Serve on University, Graduate School of Education, and Department committees as assigned
 *   Actively support the Graduate School of Education's diversity agenda
 *   Participate in community outreach and partnerships
 *   Provide program coordination and leadership as assigned
 *   Actively engage in program assessment for development

Key Cultural Competencies

 *   Creates an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences.
 *   Functions and communicates effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
 *   Seeks opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement.
 *   Adheres to all of PSU’s policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct.

Appointment:  Both positions are at the Assistant Professor level, 1.0 FTE, tenure-track, nine-month appointment, commencing September 16, 2013.  Summer employment is expected for the school counseling position and is likely for the other position.

Compensation:  The minimum starting annual salary rate will be $53,442, actual rate dependent upon qualifications and experience, with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid health care; a generous retirement vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon University System schools.
