Overview College student deaths from alcohol poisoning are prevalent in higher education. This presentation shares the results of a study testing the impact of a medical amnesty policy and an educational video on students' help seeking intentions when witnessing alcohol poisoning symptoms in their peers. Findings showed support for both a medical amnesty policy and an educational video, with the medical amnesty policy being the most influential factor. Recommendations for campuses considering adoption of medical amnesty policies will be offered.
Goals
The overall purpose of this session is to assist student affairs professionals in understanding the philosophy of medical amnesty policies, evaluate the empirical evidence surrounding the policies, and provide a forum for ideas to be shared regarding implementation and evaluation of such policies. The session seeks to accomplish the following specific goals:
1. Provide an overview of the literature on medical amnesty policies and helping behavior among college students.
2. Provide an overview of the literature on on-line alcohol education as it relates to increasing recognition of alcohol poisoning symptoms.
3. Share results of a study that tested the impact of a medical amnesty policy and an educational video on college students' intentions to seek help in response to an alcohol poisoning scenario.
4. Engage in facilitated discussion about implementation and evaluation of medical amnesty policies.
About the Presenter
Laura Oster-Aaland, PhD has directed alcohol and other drug abuse prevention programs at North Dakota State University for the past 10 years. She has published several journal articles on college student drinking and was principal investigator on a NIH/NIAAA grant addressing high risk drinking among freshman and 21st birthday celebrants on the NDSU campus. Her primary research interests focus on context specific drinking (e.g. tailgating, 21st birthdays), individual interventions to reduce high risk drinking, and medical amnesty policies.
