Spend a Week with Robyn Ochs!

Robyn Ochs, a favorite guest of the OU LGBTA Community, returns to OU for a spectacular 5 day mini-residency next Monday - Friday (September 27-October 1). Open Doors, OU's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Center, Department of Residential Housing, the Women's Center, the Office of Diversity, Access & Equity, and the Student Activities Commission invite the OU and Athens community to "Spend a Week with Robyn Ochs!"

Robyn Ochs is a long-time activist, professional speaker, and workshop leader. (Read more about Robyn below the schedule.) "This is Robyn's third visit to OU. Students always respond well to Robyn's message and style of teaching. I am delighted that she agreed to spend a week on campus to help educated more people. This is a first! I hope folks make time for one or more of her presentations."  -Mickey Hart, Director of the LGBT Center.

SafeZone Supplemental Training: Choosing to Label: What's in a Name?
Bi, lesbian, gay, straight, queer, questioning, choose-not-to-label. How do people decide which label to use? What do labels do? What don't they do? Is it possible to avoid labels? What is the difference between ascribed labels and chosen labels? How can we manage our identities in order to get the maximum benefit with the minimum cost? Let's think creatively and proactively about identity. This is a participatory workshop, and all are welcome.

        Understanding & Supporting Students of All Sexual Orientations
Our teens and twenties are times of exploration, discovery and growth. For non-heterosexual students, this is a time when presumptive labels and sexuality are called into question. Robyn will discuss her work with teens and young adults, and share some of her observations and the lessons she has learned.

ABOUT ROBYN OCHS:
Robyn Ochs is a long-time activist, professional speaker, and workshop leader. Her primary fields of interest are Identity and Coalition Building. She is the editor of the 42-country anthology Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World; and the quarterly newsletter, Bi Women.  She has taught courses on LGBT history and politics in the United States, and the experiences of those who transgress the binary categories of gay|straight, masculine|feminine, black|white and|or male|female. She has spoken at hundreds of colleges, universities, and conferences in the US and beyond. Robyn's writings have been published in numerous bisexual, women's studies, multicultural, and LGBT anthologies. She has appeared on a number of talk shows, including Donohue, Rolanda, Maury Povich, Women Aloud, Real Personal, Hour Magazine and the Shirley Show (Canada); and in Seventeen and Newsweek.
