A leader is best
When people barely know he (she) exists,
Not so good when people obey and acclaim him (her),
Worst when they despise him (her)
"Fail to honor people, they fail to honor you";
But of a good leader, who talks little,
When his (her) work is done, his (her) aim fulfilled,
They will say, "We did this ourselves."
Lao-tzu, Chinese sage
Our unbridled consumption impoverishes people we will never meet. Much of the time we participate unconsciously, ignorant of the impact of our actions.
