Billing for advance care planning services
To encourage conversation between patients and their physicians about long-term treatment options, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services established payments for advance care planning - effective Jan. 1, 2016 - CPT codes 99497 for the first 30 minutes to discuss advance planning with an average payment of $85.99, for each additional 30 minutes, CPT codes 99498 with an average payment of $74.88. CMS has not limited the number of times these codes can be billed. When billing multiple times, documentation should note changes in health and/or wishes regarding end-of-life care. Heritage College fellowship program now accepting applications
The Heritage College is offering a no-cost, one-year fellowship training program to help Ohio-based osteopathic and allopathic residency directors and medical education managers build their administrative knowledge and skills. The Academy of Healthcare Leaders and Managers, formerly the Residency Directors Fellowship Program, is a unique program that helps fellows prepare for challenges such as the political, economic and organizational pressures that can affect residency training. The deadline to apply is June 10 and the program begins in July. Ohio Osteopathic Symposium continues to grow
The 2016 Ohio Osteopathic Symposium posted record-breaking attendance, with 864 people gathering in Columbus April 20-24 to network, keep up to date with continuing medical education, and discuss emerging issues facing the osteopathic medical profession. Physicians, residents recognized at OOS
At the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium in Columbus last month, 35 individuals were recognized with awards from the Heritage College Society of Alumni and Friends, the Ohio Osteopathic Association, and the Ohio chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Awardees included OOA Mentor of the Year David W. Towle, D.O., ACOFP Family Physician of the Year Douglas W. Harley, D.O. ('02) and ACOFP Family Medicine Resident of the Year Anthony C. OOS poster award winners
Eight students and residents were recognized for their research and scholarly work during the 6th annual Ohio Osteopathic Poster Competition and Exhibition. Organizers, who for the first time opened the competition to MD trainees, received 120 abstracts. Winners included Nicole George, D.O. ('15); Kruti Patel, D.O. (OhioHealth/Doctors Hospital); Hoda Ilias, D.O. (Fairfield Medical Center); Obianuju Eziolisa, OMS II; Olutayo Sogunro, D.O. (Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center); Anastasia Bessas, D.O. ('14) (Fairfield Medical Center); Maureen Cheung, D.O. ('14) (Western Reserve Hospital); and Ben Ahrens, D.O. (OhioHealth/Riverside Methodist Hospital Family Medicine). The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education and the Ohio Osteopathic Association sponsor the competition, which is held annually during the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium. Clinical campuses recognize outstanding graduates from Class of 2016
At the Heritage College Commencement Awards Ceremony earlier this month faculty from each of the college's clinical campuses presented an Outstanding Student Award to a graduate from the Class of 2016. Award recipients were: Megan Jones (Affinity Medical Center); Megan Krallman (Central Ohio Clinical Campus); Frances Adkins (Cleveland Clinic/South Pointe Hospital); Robin Fuchs (Firelands Regional Medical Center); Michael Platt (Grandview Medical Center); Kara Kwiatkowski (Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center); Evelyn Eakin (OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital); Rebekah Crawford (Southern Ohio Medical Center); Kimberly Klosz (St. John Medical Center); Mallory Ucchino (St. Joseph Warren Hospital); and Abigail Huff (Western Reserve Hospital). NASA psychiatrist alum tells Heritage College graduates, 'Plan to change'
When Ronald C. Moomaw, D.O. ('80), entered Ohio University's then-new osteopathic medical college as part of its first incoming class 40 years ago, he had 23 classmates. On May 7, at the 37th Commencement of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Moomaw addressed a graduating class more than five times that size. Student who missed graduation for birth of baby gets his own ceremony
David M. Muncy, D.O., didn't walk across stage with his Heritage College classmates to take his degree and be "hooded" as a new physician, but he had a solid excuse for missing commencement - his wife was giving birth to their second child, a boy named Apollo. MEDICAL APP REVIEW: ICD-10 Virtual Code Book
Developed by Precyse University, which works with heath care organizations and systems to manage health information, the ICD-10 allows users to search ICD-10 codes using clinical terms. The app lets users refine searches by adding search terms or excluding information. The app provides details that would normally be found in a code book. Available on Apple, Android and Amazon, users can save frequently used codes and create quick-reference code lists. Article by residents examines treatment of patient with facial bone fractures
OhioHealth surgical residents Christopher R. Kieliszak, D.O., and Chad R. Keller, D.O. ('11), co-authored a case report involving a patient with multiple maxillofacial fractures that were managed without surgery. The article explains the process for deciding whether or not to operate on the patient. Along with Kieliszak and Keller, the article is authored by Christopher R. Selinksky, D.O. ('10), from OhioHealth Doctors Hospital; Stephen R. Larson, M.D., from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center; and Arjun S. Joshi, M.D., from George Washington University. Student's award-winning article considers Still's principles in modern medicine
In an article that won third place in the 2015 American Osteopathic Association History Competition, Heritage College student Alexander Pennekamp, OMS IV, reflects on whether the use of some modern medical interventions clashes with osteopathic philosophy.
