Check out these 7 quick tips on effective precepting
Many physicians who consider becoming preceptors are often concerned about the impact on their practice. Experienced preceptors use a variety of techniques to lessen any negative effects. The Heritage College Office of Faculty Development has made available quick tips<https://ohio.app.box.com/files/0/f/6221553453/1/f_60980062365> to follow to make precepting smoother. Faculty development also recommends an article<https://www.teachingphysician.org/content/preparation/why-precept> published on TeachingPhysician.org that lists 11 reasons to mentor medical students.

Free online resource helps docs prepare to teach
Practical Doc is an online resource that was created to help physicians practicing in rural settings to easily access support. It offers a virtual library, technology section and what they call "Practical Prof," a collection of teaching tools to help physicians who are instructing medical students and residents. Practical prof's free modules include videos, downloadable materials and suggested strategies to address issues with teaching that range from preparing your office to assessments. Share your feedback with Stephen Davis, Ph.D. (daviss2 at ohio.edu<mailto:daviss2 at ohio.edu>), Heritage College director of faculty development. Learn more about the Practical Prof training modules<http://www.practicaldoc.ca/teaching/practical-prof/>.

Gutheil Henderson receives DO Advocate Award

Gutheil Henderson is an assistant professor of primary care at the Heritage College, Dublin. The award, created in 1997, recognizes strong supporters of osteopathic medicine. Executive Dean for Clinical Education takes new position
David L. Tolentino, D.O. ('02), who has served as the Heritage College executive assistant dean for clinical education for the past three years and spent nearly a decade as the St. John Medical Center assistant dean, has resigned. He will begin his new role as associate dean for clinical affairs at Campbell University in North Carolina in May. "I am so grateful for the opportunities that Dean Brose, Dean Johnson, Dr. Carlsen, and Dr. Wadsworth gave me. I have learned so much from them and am proud to be a product of their hard work and energy," said Tolentino. "I will truly miss my HCOM family across the academic and clinical campuses and hope to make all of them proud in my new position."

Heritage College fellowship program now accepting applications
The Heritage College is offering a no-cost, one-year fellowship training program to help Ohio-based osteopathic and allopathic residency directors and medical education managers build their administrative knowledge and skills. The Academy of Healthcare Leaders and Managers, formerly the Residency Directors Fellowship Program, is a unique program that helps fellows prepare for challenges such as the political, economic and organizational pressures that can affect residency training. The deadline to apply is June 10 and the program begins in July. Read more about the course description<https://www.ohio.edu/medicine/about/offices/academic-affairs/faculty-development/programs/ahlm.cfm>, eligibility requirements and program application<https://ohio.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_envbtKvUICK3SiF>.

Residents share research at RPAC events
In March, the Heritage College Residency Programs Advisory Committee held research days for three disciplines: otorhinolaryngology, obstetrics/gynecology and orthopedic surgery. The programs featured research presentations by residents, and at the ORL program, attendees participated in breakout groups to learn more about conducting research. Research prizes were handed out at the Orthopedic RPAC session. Awardees included: Molly McGraw, D.O. ('11), Grandview Medical Center (1st place), Aaron Boyles, D.O., OhioHealth Doctors Hospital (2nd place), and Christopher Blanchard, D.O., OhioHealth Doctors Hospital (3rd place).
Students at Grandview Medical Center take third place at Ultrafest
Five members of the Heritage College class of 2017, all doing rounds at the Grandview Medical Center clinical campus, report that they scored a third-place finish at Ohio State University's Ultrafest event. According to its website, Ultrafest is a free symposium meant to give medical students hands-on training in bedside ultrasound techniques and included competition in ultrasound games. Congratulations to Mark Gottschlich, Kyle Wenker, Megan Schaefer, Shawn Marein and Justin Lake.

Survey seeks input from Ohio physicians who see military veterans
Most of the nation's veterans receive their health care from civilian sources, not the Veterans Health Administration. Todd Fredricks, D.O. ('93), a family medicine assistant professor at the Heritage College, is conducting a study to learn how familiar civilian physicians are with veterans' health issues. He is asking Ohio physicians who care for veterans to complete a brief online survey<https://ohio.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bg7bKdMpRsTg5Sd>.

Fourth-year student becomes U.S. citizen

In February, Aung Pyie, OMS IV, took the Oath of Allegiance during a naturalization ceremony, the final step to becoming a U.S. citizen for Pyie, who immigrated to America from Burma in 2000. With the help of mentors, friends and colleagues in New York City, Pyie was granted humanitarian asylum, which is based on applicants demonstrating that they cannot return to their country because of past persecution. Pyie, whose residency match is with Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University, hopes to practice medicine in urban underserved areas and volunteer in refugee camps.
