Master Faculty awards announced
The Heritage College has recently recognized 37 of its clinical faculty members as Master Faculty, including 11 Heritage College alumni. The college bestows this honor every four years on a select group of physicians who teach at its clinical campuses, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the college. It is the highest honor the college gives faculty members working at its consortium of clinical teaching sites around the state. Heritage College faculty member named top mentor to D.O. students
Katy Kropf, D.O. ('02), an assistant professor of family medicine at the Heritage College, has been honored as Mentor of the Year by the American Osteopathic Association for her work in helping shape the future of osteopathic medicine through her mentorship of students and young physicians. The award was presented at the 2015 Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition (OMED) in Orlando, Fla., where Julie Creech, OMS III; Andrew G. Little, D.O. ('12); Ashley Coleman, OMS IV; William Plunk, OMS II; and Stephanie Wagler, wife of Josiah Wagler, D.O. ('15) also received awards. Q&A session for students to discuss single accreditation
Students are invited to attend a Q&A brown bag session on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at noon to learn more about what single accreditation means for them. Robert Cain, D.O. ('88), associate dean of graduate medical education, and David Tolentino, D.O.('02), executive assistant dean of clinical education and assistant dean at St. John Medical Center, will answer students' questions and talk about how the Heritage College is responding to the changing environment. New approach to professional development seminar for Y3 students
The professional development seminar, held in October, took a new approach to address the current realities affecting professionalism. Daniel Skinner, Ph.D., assistant professor of health policy in the Department of Social Medicine, explains how the seminar changed this year and why it's beneficial for students and undergraduate medical education at the Heritage College. Resources available for medical student use of EHRs
Medical students will likely use or observe 10 to 20 different electronic health record (EHR) systems during their rotations. Resources are available to help clinical faculty better navigate some of the issues related to EHRs and student training. Experts reveal research best practices to residents
Experienced researchers offered some advice and best practices for conducting research during a meeting of the CORE Academic Physician Program for Residents (CAP-R). Featured panelists included Carlos Higuera-Rueda, M.D., Cleveland Clinic; Sean Keyes, D.O. (PGY 5), Western Reserve Hospital; Katie Brenner, D.O. Big turnout for Emergency Medicine RPAC Research Day
Fifteen emergency medicine residents from the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) presented research conducted during their residency training at the annual Emergency Medicine Residency Program Advisory Committee (RPAC) Research Education Conference. Second Annual Western Reserve Hospital Research Day a success
The Second Annual Western Reserve Hospital Research Day, held November 9 and 18, included three research poster winners chosen by judges who are practicing physicians at the hospital. The winners received cash prizes for their poster.  Four "People's Choice" winners were selected by the residents and medical students at the hospital and gave podium presentations during the event. The poster competition featured six biomedical/clinical posters, 17 case report posters and two exhibition posters.  Research day was the idea of orthopedic resident Sean Keyes, D.O. Stephen Davis named AACOM's 2015 Scholar-in-Residence
Stephen S. Davis, Ph.D., is the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine's 2015 Scholar-in-Residence. For the program, Davis, the director of faculty development and an assistant professor of family medicine at the Heritage College, is working on a project to help allopathic clinical faculty who precept osteopathic students. Summa Health promotes Kelley, D.O., to vice president of medical education
Heritage College alumnae Cynthia Kelley, D.O. ('01), has been named Summa Health's vice president of medical education. In this role she will provide administrative oversight and direction for all Summa Health medical education activities. She will also serve as Summa's designated institutional official (DIO), a role required by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which is responsible for all ACGME-accredited GME programs. She has worked for Summa for nearly 15 years and previously served as the DIO for the Heritage College.
