The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA 
<http://www.learningoutcomeassessment.org/>), co-located at Indiana 
University and the University of Illinois, is a new group formed to 
assist institutions in discovering and adopting promising practices in 
the assessment of college student learning outcomes. A fundamental 
element in this initiative is gathering information on the changing 
assessment landscape.

To that end, within the next week or so, your chief academic officer 
will receive an invitation to participate in an important institutional 
survey conducted by NILOA. The survey is brief—it should take about 15 
minutes to complete—and asks about the tools and approaches your 
institution is using to assess student learning. With support from 
foundations and help from several higher education associations, George 
Kuh (Indiana University) and Stan Ikenberry (University of Illinois) are 
sending the survey to all accredited two- and four-year colleges and 
universities in the United States to gain a clearer picture of outcome 
assessment practices nationwide.

Of course, your institution's participation is voluntary, and the 
response will remain confidential, but the results may be useful to all 
of us since the results are likely to be the most current and 
comprehensive picture of these practices available. As a gesture of 
appreciation, Kuh and Ikenberry will send your institution an advance 
report of the survey results prior to any public release of the data.
