The Central Region Humanities Center of Ohio University will award 6 syllabus development grants of $1000 each and 2 research grants of up to $3000 apiece in each of two cycles, with deadlines of June 15 and September 15, 2019, in order to encourage regional humanities studies within the forthcoming American Studies Certificate program.

Full-time Group I and Group II faculty are eligible for both grants. A cover sheet for applications is attached below.

TEACHING GRANTS ($1000 each) will support adaptation of established courses so that regional humanities content becomes approximately 20% of the syllabus. Six grants are available in June and again in September, with preference to course offerings scheduled for 2019-20 and 2020-21. Submit applications to Gary Holcomb <holcomb at ohio.edu<mailto:holcomb at ohio.edu>>, AmST Teaching Committee Chair, or Jerry Miller <millerj5 at ohio.edu<mailto:millerj5 at ohio.edu>>.

RESEARCH GRANTS ($3000 maximum each) will support scholarly projects closely tied to regional American Studies themes and expenses related to project development. Topics need not play directly into the courses that faculty will teach, and curriculum-related work is not eligible, although a central premise of faculty scholarship is that such expertise always informs instruction. Rather, the criteria will focus on the scholarly value of the project for advancing knowledge of regional American culture, as persuasively proposed. Preference is for interdisciplinary projects in the tradition of American Studies. Deadlines are June 15, 2019 for 2018-19 funding and September 16, 2019 for 2019-20 funding. The goal is to support at least 4 faculty American Studies research projects between January and December 2019. Submit applications—including the CRHC proposal cover sheet, itemized budget, and project description (5 pp. max), and timeline for completion—to Brian Schoen <schoen at ohio.edu<mailto:schoen at ohio.edu>> or Roger Aden <aden at ohio.edu<mailto:aden at ohio.edu>>.

N.B. The CRHC endowment limits funding to humanities content or methods within American Studies and defines regional in accordance with the NEH designation of the Central Region as the states of Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and West Virginia. Regional therefore denotes content focused on any or up to all of the listed states or portions thereof. We encourage applications not only from those teaching in traditional humanities areas like History, English, Music, Art History, and so on, but also from any instructor whose pedagogy qualifies as humanistic regional American Studies in the social sciences.
